Technological advancement has allowed the production of everything from rubber mats to baseball bats to be made faster and with less errors than ever before. Special purpose machinery is used on production lines and in manufacturing in industries as diverse as motor production to dinner service manufacturing. We take a look the history behind the need for special purpose machinery. Special purpose machinery is used to produce finished goods from a collection of raw components or materials. This type of operation is often called a turnkey solution. Before the development of machinery in the industrial era, many products had to be made by hand. This was often a costly and labour intensive procedure. Not only was the extraction or sourcing of materials difficult, but so was the creating of products. This meant that many manufactured goods were so expensive that only the wealthiest people could afford them creating obvious class divides. During the industrial revolution it became easier to source materials for production purposes thanks to the internal combustion engine. This led to other machinery being produced that would make products easier and faster to manufacture. Using special purpose machinery to make goods meant that items became cheaper to produce, and available in greater abundance. For the consumer, these goods were more readily available and cheaper, therefore available to people who could not afford them before. This trend has continued, and the result is that the majority of people in the UK enjoy luxuries that would have previously been reserved only the wealthiest of people. Without special purpose machinery, even the most basic product would be costly due to the fact that it would be handmade, which would take many hours. When producing a cup for example; crafted by hand even an experienced potter could not beat the time it takes for an automated system to produce several cups of the same standard. In the space of a little over 100 years, we have gone from hand powered looms to special purpose machinery that is capable of creating microchips that utilise nano technology to move electrical charges. As such, the majority of people get to enjoy luxuries such as mobile phones, computers and labour saving devices. It is the production of labour saving devices in particular that has helped the accessibility of manufactured products to all classes. Without goods such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners and central heating, people would simply not have the time to earn money to buy specially manufactured goods.
