Home food storage is a topic that is increasingly on the mind of many American homemakers. Contributing factors, such as the economy and the unemployment rate are altering the perceptions about building up a supply of food for family and personal use in the event that a major catastrophe should strike and people will go to the stores only to find no food available. The recent swine flu pandemic scare that has gripped the world has some people wondering what will be next. If offices, schools and other public buildings close because of public health concerns will people be able to leave their homes or will public health quarantines prevent people from going outdoors? With questions like these on the minds of the American people many families are beginning to take a more serious look not only at their finances, but also at their ability to store food should a national, or even local, emergency arise. Canned and dried storage items are being sold in bulk in some areas. Products like rice and dry cereal have been snatched up, leaving grocery store shelves empty. In some communities a few homes are turning to in home canning of home grown produce for storage, but what about frozen foods? It is true that vacuum sealed bags can remain in freezers for extended periods of time without spoiling or exposure to freezer burn. Bag sealer products are allowing the home storage market to preserve meat and fish using plastic bag sealers to lock in freshness and prevent freezer burn. Just as canned goods are being stored in basements and garages, bag sealers are helping families to stock up on supplies of frozen foods stored in outdoor freezers in garages and basements. Bag sealers can also be used to enclose dried foods for storage, such as banana chips or jerky which homemakers have prepared with a food dehydrator. While each of these food storage precautions are in preparation of unseen events which may never happen, it is better to have something on hand for the unexpected rather than be caught off guard by procrastination and wishful thinking. Even if a state of emergency is never declared and the future ends up to be brighter than it has ever been, having a basic food storage on hand, that is being rotated through regular grocery preparation and consumption, is a good idea that can help take the pinch off the pocketbook.
