Awnings; So Much More Than A Simple Sun Shade

By: Thomas Pretty

Awnings in the past were merely used as a method of providing shade at the side of houses; allowing home owners to enjoy fine summertime weather without the risk of being burnt or suffering from sunstroke. Today however awnings can be used to accentuate a home, providing character, individualism and charm. The following article highlights some of the reasons to install awnings and some of the considerations needed when purchasing.

One of the most financially sensible reasons for installing awnings is that they actively protect the window frames of a home. The elements such as the rain and sun cause considerable damage to window frames and awnings can shield them from these destructive forces. In a similar vein, an awning can help to protect garden and patio furniture from the elements.

An added benefit of installing an awning is that when the weather is wet, windows can be kept open, helping air to circulate in the home without sills becoming damp. An awning can also prevent glare within a room, adding to the viewing experience when watching television or films. Computer screens also benefit from this feature making an awning perfect for a home office.

In a recent study awnings were found to reduce the interior heat in a room considerably. Estimates state that in rooms with south facing windows; heat can be reduced by as much as sixty five percent. Similarly in rooms with east and west facing windows interior heat can be reduced by as much as seventy seven percent.

When choosing to purchase there are four main considerations that should be made. The first of these is the material the awning should be constructed from; common materials are aluminium and fabric, with the latter available in a range of colours and patterns; naturally fabric varieties require more maintenance.

The angle of the awning is also important; it differs on the direction in which the awning will face, with a more severe gradient for east west facing windows. Side panels can also be added to make the awning more of a structure and to ensure coverage from a variety of different angles. The final consideration is the whether an awning should be permanent, as in stationary, free standing, as in away from the wall and, retractable. All these options should be considered before making a purchase.

Hopefully this article has cleared up some of the issues around awnings and presented some of the valid benefits of installation. It has also attempted to give brief consumer advice on how customers can make a considered purchase.
