All You Need To Know About Tattoo Equipment

By: Anna Stenning

When one considers the option of getting their first tattoo it can often be a very daunting decision to make and one can be put off by the prospect of being invaded by a lot of needles for at least any hour, just so they have a pretty marking on the skin. It is somewhat frightening to walk in to that parlour and see the equipment which will be used upon you. That and adding to the fact that you will not know the kind of pain subjected onto you, it is no surprise then to see some people walk away from it at the last minute.

However for those who are considering a tattoo then there are a few things to remember and not just that you will be in safe hands with a trained and experienced professional tattoo artist. It would be a good start to become familiar with the tattoo equipment that the artist will use. If it is one thing walking into a parlour and facing these strange objects, it is another not to know how it will be used. After all the procedure will be invasive and for some, painful so you will feel better prepared if you knew what they were doing and how they are using the equipment.

All tattoo equipment is designed to be as painless as possible, seems difficult to understand however some may still feel some discomfort during the process - especially if it is their first tattoo. Before getting a tattoo you may speak to the tattoo artist about the equipment that they use, how they are used and what each one will feel like. Apart from the obvious tattoo gun, which consists of multiple needles that will penetrate the skin, there are the needles themselves that will also make a difference on how you will feel during the process.

There are two main needles that are used for the tattooing process - the liner and the shader. The tattoo gun is very accurate and precise, provided that artist has had plenty of experience and is blessed with a steady hand. The liner needle is a single needle which creates the outline of the design, whereas the shader is composed of more than one needle and is used to fill in the area with colour. Each one is designed to perform accurately and with minimal pressure as possible.

The other tattoo equipment is mainly used for sterilisation such as the autoclave. This uses pressure and steam that sterilise each piece of equipment, preventing any risk of spreading disease. All tattoo artists should be strict with sterilisation however there are some parlours which are not so strict. If you are in doubt always ask the artist what their procedure is on this subject making sure that they are clear in their daily routine. All experienced artists should go through a normal daily routine of replacing or discarding equipment, sterilising the surfaces and equipment before and after each procedure. If they are not clear on all of this, it is best to avoid them completely.
